Velocity Retail Group celebrated the ribbon cutting of the “Teen Den” for the Child Life program at Maricopa County Integrated Health Systems.  The Velocity Charities Committee launched the Teen Den project about two years ago after completing a toy drive for the Child Life Program at MIHS.  Kyla Mohney, Child Life Specialist for MIHS saw a need to help the teen patients at the hospital.   “Our goal is to help reduce stress for kids that are here at the hospital.  We do that in many ways, one is by incorporating play in their daily lives and assisting with preparation before procedures.  We want them to make it more of a positive experience and provide the children with coping skills,” she said.

“Everything starts with a vision and Kyla saw the need to improve the hospital experience for teen patients and had the dream of a room, a sanctuary where teenagers could come and be themselves,” said Dave Cheatham, President of Velocity Retail Group.

Steve Purves, President and Chief Executive Office for MIHS addressed the attendees “MIHS can’t do everything alone and we rely on partners to help us along the way.  This room might be small in size, but it is huge in our eyes and we want to thank everyone involved for their efforts to make this dream for the teen patients become a reality.”

Along with Velocity Retail Group, Kitchell Contractors and Orcutt Winslow played key roles in seeing the project to completion by donating personnel, supplies, labor and time.  Other partners included, Alliance Fire Protection, Bizarre Wood, Cannon and Wendt Electric, Child’s Play, Corporate Technology Solutions, Haworth, Lanmor, NKW Inc., Rembrandt, Spectra Flooring, TD Industries, TP Acoustics, Tucson Business Interiors.

The room is equipped with a movie projector and drop down screen, computers to allow teens to do homework, the latest in gaming technology and many other interactive games. The funds collected by Velocity Retail were used to purchase many of the tech items.
